Bryan Gonzales

I lead a team of enthusiastic young scientists from various backgrounds that conduct research on nutrition, especially in low and middle-income countries using systems epidemiology (mainly metabolomics and proteomics) to unravel mechanisms driving both under- and overnutrition, and diet-related non-communicable disease risk in vulnerable populations.

Prof Gerard Bryan Gonzales is Associate Professor of Nutrition at the Department of Public Health and Primary Care, Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, UGent. He has a background in food technology and chemistry, and performed his PhD on the topic of mass spectrometric analysis of flavonoids and their bioaccessibility and cellular bioactivity (2016) at UGent. He then obtained an FWO postdoc in collaboration with the Doctors Without Borders (FWO) and was visiting postdoc at the Hospital for Sick Children (Canada), Kenya Medical Research Institute – Wellcome Trust (Kenya), and University of Cambridge. Before rejoining UGent in 2023, he was Assistant Professor of Nutrition, Metabolism and Genomics at Wageningen University (Netherlands).
